Have Yourself a Honey Holiday

Whether you’re a baking traditionalist – sugar cookies only, please! – or prefer to mix things up – honey apple cranberry pie, anyone? – you can substitute sugar with honey in your baking for a yes-to-seconds holiday season.

Because honey contains complex sugars, our bodies take longer to break down the sugars, meaning fewer calories are accumulated. Not to mention it creates a moister texture, a golden crust and it’s just as sweet as sugar. It’s a not-so-secret baking hack that plenty of bakers have vouched for.

But before you preheat the oven, know these things:

Use less honey than sugar: Because honey is sweeter than sugar, you’ll need less of it. The general rule is, for every 1 cup of sugar, use 1/2 to 2/3 cup of honey. You can use a 1:1 substitution ratio for most yeast breads, muffins, pancakes and waffles.

Reduce liquids: When substituting honey, you’ll need to subtract 1/4 cup of other liquids because honey naturally contains water.

Add baking soda: Even if the recipe doesn’t call for it, add ¼ teaspoon of baking soda for every 1 cup of honey. Baking soda helps balance honey’s natural acidity and allows baked goods to rise properly.

Lower the temp: Honey caramelizes faster than granulated sugar, and therefore burns faster, so reduce the oven by 25 degrees.

Okay, now you can preheat the oven and start mixing one of these tis-the-season treats:

Make Back-to-School Sweeter with Honey!

School is officially back in session, which means fall sports are in full-swing. Our #ShareSweetness team traveled throughout Washington and found some young athletes along the way perfecting their sports. The girls of Easton Preps were working hard at softball practice when we buzzed by.  We thought they needed a bit of an energy boost, so we gave them some Sue Bee® honey and Aunt Sue’s® honey, along with some waters and snacks.  We told the softball moms and dads about our Eleven Granola Bar Recipes Using Honey. They thought we hit a home run with these snack ideas that are made with simple ingredients they can feel good about feeding to their kids.

We also met the young men of Mount Si High School’s tennis team in Snoqualamie, WA.  These guys were bursting with energy and they were excited about the sweet treat we served up.  They were preparing for their first match (and win) of the year, and we gave them some tips to make some Quick, School-friendly Snacks to help keep them fueled up all year long.

We think these guys aced their photoshoot! We loved getting the chance to #ShareSweetness with these teams as they get ready to take on the school year. Stay tuned to see the rest of the Share a Little Sweetness tour adventures!

Should we call it the Wine and Jazz AND HONEY festival?!

When the #ShareSweetness Tour brought us to the Portland area, we decided it was time to put our fancy pants on … starting with this fabulous Charcuterie Tray with Honey Mustard Sauce we made for the guys at KXL Radio. As we munched on the snacks, we told them all about our upcoming event, the Vancouver Wine and Jazz Festival, and how they can elevate their next wine night with a honey-infused charcuterie tray.

The classiness continued over the weekend at the festival. Guests sipped some vino and learned that our honey pairs well with anything in their glasses! They were particularly impressed that our company is nearly 100 years old.

We got the chance to go to the backstage greenroom where all the jazz musicians warmed up for their set. Every artists’ pre-show routine is different – some prefer to rest their voice, some do vocal exercises, and others drink a hot soothing beverage. So, of course, we left some Aunt Sue’s® Raw & Unfiltered Honey to mix into their pre-show Cup of Tea.

Our team enjoyed sharing sweetness with everyone we met in Vancouver!  We are off to the Seattle area next … stay tuned!

Is honey an alternative to energy drinks? Oregon runners find out!

The excitement continued through the Portland area on the #ShareSweetness tour! The 36th annual Hood to Coast Relay race was in full swing when we found them blazing trails downtown. The runners had completed about one third of their 199-mile relay, which spans from Mount Hood to the beaches of the Pacific Ocean.

The sun began to set, and participants were in for a long night of running. Our worker bees went into full cheerleader mode and pumped up the crowd with encouraging words and – you guessed it – HONEY! We explained to the runners that honey is Mother Nature’s energy booster and is a fantastic alternative to processed energy drinks and bars.  Kansas City Royals sports dietitian Mitzi Dulan explains it best, “Honey is composed of a unique carbohydrate composition of natural sugars and trace amounts of antioxidants, enzymes, minerals, vitamins and amino acids, making it a smart, natural energy-filled afternoon snack. In fact, for years, sports dietitians have recommended that athletes include pure honey into their pre-exercise meal or snack for that very reason.”

Sioux Honey Association Co-op supports the health and wellbeing of children and is proud to encourage donations to the Texas Diaper Bank to assist local Texas communities in need. The “Share a Little Sweetness” tour, which has covered 4,000 miles throughout its 10-week duration, is built around sharing U.S. Grade A honey products produced by beekeepers, many based in Washington, and performing acts of kindness in local communities. The Sioux Honey Association Co-op will be matching every box of diapers donated.

About Sioux Honey Association Co-op
The Sioux Honey Association Co-op began nearly 100 years ago by beekeepers with a passion for pure, honest honey. That passion remains today, and every Sioux Honey brand (Aunt Sue’s® honey and Sue Bee® honey) is held to the standards set in 1921 – standards our hundreds of independent beekeepers have helped us keep. Together, we continue to share a little sweetness by educating consumers on bee-friendly behaviors, sharing recipes and, of course, delivering that same, delicious honey. Share Sweetness Tour Finishes Golden State Stretch Just in Time for Solar Eclipse in Oregon

We kicked off our Northern California leg of the tour with the California Beer Festival in Santa Cruz, and made sure to bring enough party favors for everyone (pro tip – honey is a great addition to beer!)

Our Honey Mustard Pretzel Dip was a huge hit, but the highlight of this stop was without a doubt the photo booth.

We kept the party rolling the next day up in San Francisco at the Stern Grove Festival with a live performance from War. Don’t let the band’s name mislead you, though, because this stop was all about love.

In 1967, more than 100,000 people converged in Haight-Ashbury to commence a Summer of Love. What better place for us to celebrate the halfway point of our summer of sweetness than right in the heart of where it all took place?

It was hard not to feel the love while being surrounded by such natural beauty and grooving along to live music from the outdoor amphitheater.

After our weekend of fun, we had one more stop to make before leaving the Golden State. There have been many disasters that have affected the residents in California, most notably the large amount of wildfires that have sprung up this year. The American Red Cross Gold Country Region does so much to provide relief for victims of these disasters, and we wanted to help them do that.

Our sample-sized honey packets were the perfect way to help blood donors replenish after making their life-saving donation, and we hope our Sioux Honey teddy bears provided some sweet relief for children and families affected. Our Share a Little Sweetness reusable bags and a honey gift box were also donated for the Red Cross Classic, an annual golf tournament from which all proceeds help support local emergency services.

The sun set on our time in California, but we left with full hearts and a full mobile hive, ready to take on the Pacific Northwest.

We took the scenic route up the coast, and landed in Hood River, Oregon for the Columbia Gorge Paddle Challenge, a weekend-long stand-up-paddle-boarding event. The gorge is known for its downwind run, so many people come to Hood River to compete.

Our honey seemed to be just the snack these athletes needed, and it was a beautiful day on the Columbia River!

We arrived in Portland just in time to secure a spot to watch the Great American Solar Eclipse. We packed some snacks and made our way to Powell Butte Nature Park.

We made sure all of our crew members were protected as we watched the moon pass in front of the sun, covering it by 99%.

We’ve got plenty more sweetness to share before summer’s end. Follow us as we take our journey North to Washington. Next up: Evergreen State Fair in Seattle.

Sioux Honey Association Co-op’s Share Sweetness Tour Covers 4,000 Miles

Sioux Honey Association Co-op Covers 4,000 Miles
Continues to Share Sweetness in Home Stretch

After 4,000 miles and acts of kindness throughout four states, the Sioux Honey Association Co-op’s “Share a Little Sweetness” tour, which focuses on giving back to communities throughout its 10-week duration, celebrated its halfway mark in Oregon and will head for home in Sioux City, Iowa, in four weeks.

The 20-foot sampling truck’s next stop is Friday, Aug. 25 in Washington at the Vancouver Wine & Jazz Festival. The tour kicked off on July 10 in Longmont, Colo., and will conclude in Sioux City, Iowa, on Sept. 19.

To commemorate the first half of our “Share a Little Sweetness” tour, we’re looking back on some of our favorite acts of kindness thus far:

Colorado:

  • Our Share Sweetness crew visited the Children’s Hospital of Colorado to donate stuffed teddy bears and 100 “cheer cards” with special messages written by the Colorado community. The crew also shared honey samples, recipe books, and tote bags with family members and hospital staff.

Arizona:

  • Donated water bottles to the Phoenix Rescue Mission during a “code red” heat wave.
  • Shared honeybee educational kits created by the National Honey Board to Treasures 4 Teachers, a nonprofit, member-based organization that assists educators by providing school supplies at a lower cost.

California:

  • Donated 500 homemade, healthy, honey biscuit dog treats made with Aunt Sue’s Raw & Unfiltered Honey to dogs at the San Diego Humane Society and the Imperial Beach SurfDog competition. Treats where made with El Cajon-based Marley’s Gnarly Canine Cookies.
  • With the help of Office Depot, the Share Sweetness crew donated school supplies to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater San Diego. To find out more about the Share Sweetness Tour, including a complete schedule of stops and recipes, visit www.sharesweetness.com.

Family Fun in Sunny Southern California

Week 4 Highlights

This week on the Share a Little Sweetness Tour was all about honoring communities. Beekeeping, like our brand of honey, is a tradition passed down through many generations. So, as a co-op of 200+ beekeepers, the Sioux Honey Association Co-op knows the value of quality family time. Even honeybees (who sometimes show up to our events to say hi) work together in a colony to maintain their hives.

Our week started with the first responders of National City for National Night Out Against Crime. The event included safety demonstrations and a chance to get to know the people who keep the area’s families safe.

Lt. David Bavencoff, Capt. Robert Rounds, and Chief Manuel Rodriguez of the National City PD stopped by to grab some Honey I Love You Popcorn (made with our Sue Bee® Clover Honey) to get ready for the grand finale of the night, a showing of The Incredibles on the big screen.

Our crew got to #sharesweetness with the first responders by collecting “thank you” postcards during our events throughout the week in San Diego.

At this point in the tour, we realized our honey supply was getting low. Luckily, as a cooperation, we have family everywhere we go. We stopped by our distribution center in Anaheim, where we met Chris and his crew of men and women who work hard to make sure millions across the nation are able to get their hands on our honey.

Once we restocked our mobile hive, it was time to hit the ground in Los Angeles. What better way is there to spend a Saturday night than sharing sweet snacks at Movies on the Green?

With Finding Dory on the screen, it was the perfect setting for our Honey Kissed Parfait – a treat loved by adults and kids alike, especially because there are so many ways to parfait.

Sunday, we were back at Warner Ranch Park for Sundae Funday: Sue Bee® Edition. This time, the stage was set for Concerts on the Green, featuring The Who Tribute. Just like with Greek yogurt, ice cream with a drizzle of Sue Bee® honey and some fresh fruit on top was the perfect way to cool down after a hot summer day.

Our #ShareSweetness booth was swarming with hundreds of people wanting to get a taste. We could see the fun for miles and miles!

As we come up on the halfway point of this tour, spending time with those who share a love of honey and a deep commitment to togetherness was the perfect way to celebrate.

Follow our #ShareSweetness tour.

Educational Supplies Donated in Arizona and San Diego

With back-to-school season upon us, our Share Sweetness team has been busy donating supplies to teachers and students in need for the upcoming school year.

While traveling through Arizona, our team stopped by Treasures 4 Teachers, a non-profit, member-based organization with a mission to serve educators by helping them acquire low cost supplies. We met with Barbara Blalock, the founder, and Krystal Watson, membership coordinator, and provided them with honey bee educational kits created by the National Honey Board.

Krystal reached out to members on Facebook to find the perfect recipients for this curriculum – a DVD and teacher’s guide called The Honey Files: A Bee’s Life.

We can’t wait to follow up with our new friends to see how these kits are creating a buzz in their classrooms!

Next up was California where the need for school supplies is widespread this time of year. When we arrived in San Diego we found out about an effort by NBC 7 that partnered with local nonprofits in a Supporting Our Schools campaign, aimed to set students in need up for success by stocking them up with the essentials.

With the help of Office Depot, our Sioux Honey Association Co-op Share Sweetness Team loaded up a cart full of notebooks, folders, pencils, glue sticks, and more – and made our way to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater San Diego.

NBC 7 anchor Bridget Naso and a crew of volunteers excitedly greeted us in the Boys and Girls Club parking lot to accept our donation.

We even got to meet the legendary Consumer Bob and check out his sweet ride.

Consumer Bob helped us spread the word about our #ShareSweetness cause on the evening news.

We know our honey helps provide a great energy boost to start a little bee’s day. We hope our donated supplies will do the same!

Sioux Honey Association Co-Op Donates 500 Handmade Treats to San Diego Humane Society

With Marley’s Gnarly Canine Cookies Local Canine Cookie Shop, The Share Sweetness Tour Focuses on Giving Back to Local Communities Through Acts of Kindness

Monday, July 31, 2017

SAN DIEGO, California – The Sioux Honey Association Co-op’s Share Sweetness Tour, which is focusing on giving back to communities during its 10-week road trip, partnered with El Cajon-based Marley’s Gnarly Canine Cookies to deliver more than 500 homemade, healthy, honey biscuit dog treats made with Aunt Sue’s Raw & Unfiltered Honey to dogs at the San Diego Humane Society and the Imperial Beach SurfDog competition.

San Diego is the fifth stop on the first tour of its kind for the nearly 100-year-old co-op. In addition to the donated canine cookies, the team donated school supplies to the NBC 7 San Diego school supply drive. Donations at previous stops have included school supplies for Treasures 4 Teachers in Arizona and stuffed teddy bears to Children’s Hospital in Colorado.

“We’re deeply appreciative of the compassion this community has for animals,” said Kelli Schry, Communications Manager at San Diego Humane Society. “We care for 30,000 animals each year, so every donation, volunteer and adopter contributes to our ability to take care of these animals who rely on us. And the dogs are loving their treats!”

Carla Butcher, CEO of family-owned Marley’s Gnarly Canine Cookies, partnered with Sioux Honey because of her commitment to using only the best ingredients in every biscuit.

“Marley’s Gnarly Canine Cookies believes in only feeding our dogs the best ingredients, like Aunt Sue’s Raw & Unfiltered Honey, and, as always, we include the most important ingredient, love.”

The tour’s next stops will be Aug. 1 at the 13th Annual Night Out Against Crime Movies in the Park in National City, California. The Share Sweetness crew will then travel up the coast to Los Angeles and San Francisco before heading to Oregon, Washington and Idaho, and returning home to Sioux City, Iowa, where the co-op’s headquarters are located.
