Sioux Honey First to Donate to Nonprofit Supporting Little Free Pantries

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Sioux Honey Association Co-op is the first contributor to the new nonprofit organization that will power the grassroots Little Free Pantry movement. The co-op behind the Sue Bee and Aunt Sue’s Raw and Unfiltered honey brands that represents 250 American beekeepers made its donation today to support the anonymous, 24/7 pantries that serve those who struggle to put enough food on the table.

Little Free Pantries take a crowdsourced approach to meeting immediate local needs by encouraging people to “take what you need and give what you can.” Jessica McClard, a mother in Fayetteville, Arkansas, started the Little Free Pantry effort in 2016 and today hundreds exist across the country.

“Sioux Honey is made up of local beekeepers and families who help their neighbors,” said Sioux Honey beekeeper Matt Beekman. “It could be that someone is struggling with homelessness, a person is living paycheck to paycheck or a family comes up a little short one month. We’re supporters of Little Free Pantry because it’s an anonymous option for these folks who just need a little help.”

In October, Sioux Honey Association Co-op members took time away from their hives to install central California’s first documented Little Free Pantries. Beekman was one of the beekeepers involved. The co-op’s donation of $5,000 will go directly to keep the new pantries stocked with non-perishable foods and necessities.

The beekeepers partnered with organizations in three cities for the project: the Los Banos Salvation Army, Modesto Sierra Vista Resource Center and ESA/Love Inc. of Fresno. The organizations house the pantries on their property and serve as stewards of the small wooden structures.

The website for the new nonprofit, Pantry Gift Inc., will launch later this year. It will serve as a hub for others to make donations and for the organization to provide micro-grants to those who build and stock the pantries across the U.S.

“Sioux Honey’s cooperative model centering on local farmers and families makes it an ideal partner in the work of the mini pantry movement,” McClard said. “On behalf of the movement, I am proud to call Sioux Honey a partner in that work, and I am so grateful for all Sioux Honey does to nourish our communities.”

McClard says more information on the rollout of the new online platform will be available soon. Those who would like to donate in the meantime can do so by reaching out to McClard through the Little Free Pantry website.

Sioux Honey Teaming Up with Soldiers’ Angels for the Holidays

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Sioux Honey Association Co-op is joining with Soldiers’ Angels to share sweetness with deployed service members over the holidays. November 2019 marks the beginning of a partnership between the co-op and the organization, which aids  wounded heroes, military families, deployed service members and veterans of all eras.

“Sioux Honey beekeepers have been able to pursue this incredible livelihood for a century now because we have the freedom and safety to do so. We can do what we do thanks to the American military,” said Rob Buhmann, chair of the Sioux Honey board. “That’s why we are supporting Soldiers’ Angels and encouraging people to think of our troops this holiday season.”

Through the partnership, Sioux Honey is donating cases of Sue Bee honey to the Angel Bakers group – a division of Soldiers’ Angels – to be used for treats prepared for deployed military.

“We are excited for this opportunity to team up with a great brand like Sioux Honey to show our support for our military this holiday season,” said Amy Palmer, President and CEO of Soldiers’ Angels. “Although it is easy for us to take the simple things for granted, such as homemade treats, our deployed service members are always thrilled to receive care packages containing a sweet taste of home.”

Sioux Honey beekeepers are getting involved at an individual level too, sending postcards and baking treats for deployed service members. Matt Beekman of Hughson, California, recently took a break from his hives to join Angel Baker Kitty Harmon in preparing Sue Bee Pumpkin Spice Muffins for deployed soldiers. Beekman and Harmon hope the honey-baked treats will be a reminder of home, and that others will think of those who are deployed this holiday season.

“Things are always changing in this business,” said Beekman. “We’re moving bees to different areas all year. And we’re doing different functions – sometimes we’re doing pollination, sometimes we’re doing honey production.

“Despite how crazy it can be, I get to spend Thanksgiving and Christmas with my family. The same can’t be said for a lot of the men and women who are deployed right now. They are giving up their holidays to serve us.”

Sioux Honey Beekeepers Establish Central California’s First Anonymous, All-Hours Food Pantries

Those who struggle to put enough food on the table have a new place to turn thanks to a group of local beekeepers. In October, three Sioux Honey Association Co-op members took time away from their hives to install central California’s first documented Little Free Pantries.

The co-op installed the first Little Free Pantry in Los Banos earlier this month. Beekeepers unveiled additional pantries in Fresno and Modesto today.

Little Free Pantries take a crowdsourced approach to meet immediate local needs by encouraging people to “take what you need and give what you can.” The pantries are meant to be an anonymous, 24/7 option for communities. They are a spin-off of Little Free Libraries and began in 2016 with Jessica McClard, a mother in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Today hundreds exist across the country.

“The Central Valley feeds the world. No one here should go to bed hungry,” said Matt Beekman, the Sioux Honey beekeeper who installed a Little Free Pantry in Modesto.

Installation of the pantries marks the launch of what Beekman’s co-op is calling “Beekstock.” Through December, Sioux Honey is partnering with Little Free Pantry to add the first pantries in central California and keep them stocked with plenty of food.

The beekeepers partnered with local organizations in all three cities for the project. The organizations will house the pantries on their property and be stewards of the small wooden structures going forward. During the first week of October, Bob Brandi of Los Banos installed the first at the local Salvation Army. This week beekeepers added two more pantries to Sierra Vista’s Resource Center in Modesto and a neighborhood in Fresno where Marva Ward of ESA/Love Inc. resides.

The beekeepers stocked each pantry with non-perishable foods and bottles of California Beek’s honey, a new local honey product. The co-op has pledged to give a portion of Beek’s honey proceeds to keep the local pantries stocked. Beek’s can be found at Save Marts in central California or online.

Beekman says Sioux Honey is inviting others to join in on Beekstock by donating nonperishable foods or building their own pantries. He hopes Sioux Honey’s efforts will start a trend in central California and that more will pop up in the region.
