September Is National Honey Month
Right from the bees to your table, honey is pure, sweet and its uses are endless. Though this wholesome, versatile ingredient should be incorporated into daily living year-round, September is dedicated solely to celebrating honey. In 1989 the National Honey Board declared September as National Honey Month in order to help promote the beekeeping industry in the United States as well as honey itself. It has several different uses ranging from baking and cooking to beauty practices. Expand your knowledge of honey this month and learn about different ways you can utilize honey everyday!
You can use honey to help moisturize your hair, lips and skin. Create a homemade honey hair mask to help make your hair shinier and help get rid of frizz.
All you need is a small dab of honey and warm water to make a homemade face wash.
Honey can also be used to help preserve fruit so you can enjoy it all year. Preserved fruit is a delicious addition to yogurt or ice cream.
Say goodbye to energy drinks and start your day with a spoonful of honey instead. With natural sugars and carbohydrates, honey is considered a great energy booster for moms, kids, athletes and just about anybody!
Honey is also used to help soothe sore throats. Studies have shown that honey can help ease coughs and calm inflamed membranes.
Baking and cooking tips:
Baking with honey is easy. Try substituting equal parts of honey instead of sugar the next time you want to make a batch of cookies.
Because honey is a liquid, you must remember to take away liquids in other parts of your recipe. A good rule of thumb is to subtract 1/4 cup of liquid elsewhere for every full cup of honey used.
Honey bakes faster! Reduce the oven temperature by 25 degrees to prevent over-browning.
Though these are only a few basic uses, honey allows you to be creative in both your DIY remedies and in the kitchen. Without honeybees pollinating various crops and flowers, we wouldn’t have such a sweet ingredient.
