Play Dough Made with Honey
As a child, there was one item you could always count on for hours of entertainment: play dough! It allowed the mind to be creative and the imagination run wild. With a little bit of honey, flour and a few other simple ingredients, you can make your own play dough. It is soft, smells good and is long-lasting.

Here is what you will need:
- 2 tbsp Sue Bee® honey
- 2 cup flour (plus 1/4 cup to use later)
- 1/2 cup salt
- 2 tbsp cream of tartar
- 1 1/2 cup of boiling water
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
Start off by mixing the dry ingredients. In a separate bowl mix together the wet ingredients, then slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry while stirring. If the mixture looks too moist, add the extra flour as needed. Begin kneading the dough on a cutting board or hard surface that has been dusted with flour. Continue kneading until it is soft and easy to mold. If it seems too dry, add a teaspoon of oil and knead it in until the desired consistency. When the kids are finished playing with the homemade play dough, store it in an air-tight container so you can use it for a few months!
Why You Should Be Grilling With Honey
Let’s face it, grilling is an art form. It takes the right amount of know-how and lovin’ to get the perfect cook on your meats. Whether you’re a grilling novice or a master of the barbecue, we’ve got the ideal hack to help take your food to the next level: honey! Honey can help improve everything from the juiciness of your meats to the crispness of your veggies. Get ready to kick your barbecue into high gear with these four useful tips that will make honey as crucial to your grilling routine as tongs and matches.
Honey Retains Moisture in Meats
When you incorporate honey into marinades and brines, your meat can keep its moisture more effectively due to honey’s hygroscopic nature (the ability of a substance to attract and hold water). For ways to keep your chicken and burgers juicier, try any one of our five Honey-sweetened Marinades at your next barbecue.
Honey Helps Prolong Marinade Shelf Life
Well-known for its preservative qualities, honey can help marinades last longer while adding the perfect amount of sweetness. Simply add 1/4 cup honey to your favorite mixture!
Honey Can Help Enhance Browning and Crisping
If you like your food to have a little crunch when it comes off the grill, try glazing it first with honey. It’s the perfect way to add texture, color and, of course, flavor to popular dishes like pork, chicken, vegetables and even fruits. You’ll love the crispness and color that honey adds to our grilled Honey Mustard-Glazed Pork Tenderloin!
Honey Is a Great Alternative to Processed Sugar
Compared to granulated or brown sugar, honey is often considered a better option. Not only does honey contain many of the essential vitamins and nutrients that the body requires, but it’s also easier for our bodies to digest. In recipes, simply substitute honey – cup for cup – in place of sugar. As a rule, reduce other liquids by 1/4 cup for every cup of honey used.

Importance of Honeybees
“The bee is more honored than other animals, not because she labors, but because she labors for others.” – St. John Chrysostom
It’s no secret that honeybees are one of the most important species in protecting our ecosystem. Let’s take a deeper look at the direct and indirect impact that honeybees have on our lives and what our planet would be like without them.

Honeybees have been used for agricultural purposes for longer than you may think. According to melittologist (studier of bees) Eva Crane, people have been keeping bees since as early as 20,000 B.C. There are even ancient Egyptian pottery designs that portray honeybees and honeycombs!
In the U.S., historical records indicate that honeybees were shipped to the country from England as early as 1622 – further illustrating the importance these wonderful creatures have played in our agriculture industry for generations.
Think of honeybees as nature’s natural farmers. You may not even realize it but, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, one out of every three bites you eat directly or indirectly depends on honeybee pollination. Without the honeybee, nearly one-third of our food supply in the United States would be gone. This potential reduction would have global effects too as it could result in a population decline throughout the entire world. To help prevent this reduction, there are plenty of ways you can Support the Honeybee and Other Pollinators such as Bee-Friendly Gardening and reducing your use of harmful pesticides.
To understand exactly how important honeybees are to U.S. agriculture, consider the facts:
- Honeybees contribute more than $15 billion in U.S. crop production
- Blueberries and cherries are 90% dependent upon honeybee pollination
- Almonds are 100% dependent upon honeybee pollination
- Honeybees are responsible for pollinating over 400 different crops such as apples, strawberries, avocados, almonds, blueberries, cherries, coffee beans, onions, broccoli and cantaloupe
- Of the 100 crops that provide 90% of the world’s food supply, over 70% are pollinated by bees
Alfalfa, another crop that is pollinated by the U.S. honeybee, plays a crucial role in keeping our environment healthy. Researchers have claimed that the extinction of just one animal has the potential to create a “domino effect” that could result in the extinction of many more species. Because alfalfa is the main food source for dairy cows and a secondary food source for beef cows, sheep and horses, the decline of alfalfa yield could be a devastating blow to the dairy and beef industries. Without enough alfalfa to feed livestock, they could become endangered or even extinct.
Humans, animals and plant species alike all depend on honeybees in some way. And, while it’s important to understand the effect that humans have on honeybees, it’s even more important to know that you can help!
